Course Summary: In this class you’ll be taking stock of yourself, your passions, your values, and the kind of person you want to be. This will help you to refine your goals, clarify your values, focus on building your character, and it is also excellent preparation for the personal statement essays you’ll eventually be writing when you apply to colleges.
In this class, you’ll be writing an essay each week in response to the questions below.
Homework assignments will be as follows:
Week 1: What are you most passionate about or interested in? Why?
Week 2: Who are your heroes in today’s world? Why?
Week 3: Who are your heroes from the past? Why?
Week 4: If you could spend an afternoon with any famous person, living or dead, whom would you choose? Why?
Week 5: What character from literature do you most admire? Why?
Week 6: What character from literature do you most dislike or abhor? Why?
Week 7: What do you consider as your greatest character-building accomplishment or experience? Why?
Class Size: Eight students
Class Time: One hour per week*
Class Dates: Eight weeks*
Homework: About one hour of homework time each week.

Bringing her lifelong love of teaching and her 20+ years of experience to Keetown, where she’s taught for the past 10 years, Coach Cherie is dedicated to transforming essay writing for her students from a dreaded task into an exciting challenge. Her background includes a Summa Cum Laude B.A in English, and two Masters degrees: one from Brandeis in English, and one in Creative Writing from Stanford, where she also ran the English Department’s Tutorial Center. Cherie loves inspiring students to deepen their critical thinking, and delights in watching them begin to take pride in their writing as they progress under her tutelage.
