Course Summary: This course is designed for high school students who wish to enhance their analytical writing skills while studying advanced literature. Throughout the course, students will study a diverse selection of literary texts, including poetry, essays, drama, and prose, and develop critical thinking and writing skills in the process. The course is 12 weeks long, with one-hour sessions each week. Students will complete a total of six essays assigned as homework, three of which will be timed essays to prepare for the AP Literature and Composition exam. One hour of homework will be assigned each week to help students prepare for class activities and discussions.
In this course, students will:
- Analyze and interpret a range of literary texts
- Identify and analyze complex elements of literature
- Use close reading techniques to analyze and evaluate difficult texts
- Write clear and concise analytical essays that demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the texts
- Conduct research and use evidence effectively to support arguments
- Prepare for the AP Literature and Composition exam through analytical writing
Class Size: 8-10 students
Class Time: 1(or 2) hours per session*
Class Dates: 12 weeks (or six weeks)*
Homework: Around 60 minutes each week

About Coach Medel
Courtney Medel earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Writing from Biola University, where she was a featured poet for the annual poetry forum. Afterward, Courtney taught English as a second language at the Universidad Catolica in Santiago, Chile. Courtney wanted to pursue a career in education and obtained a single subject credential in English Language Arts and a Master of Education from National University. She has taught high school English grades 9–12 and AP English in California and has worked at international bilingual schools in Cali, Colombia.
