Course Summary: Creative Writing is a class focusing on the process of building a story.  If your student has taken Literary Elements 1 & 2, then they have learned the fundamental elements of the story (character, plot, setting, theme, point of view) and some of the literary devices which make the story interesting (symbolism, motif, flashback, foreshadow, allegory, imagery).  In this class we will look further into developing these elements as well as how to develop characters, create a mood, write believable dialogue, and build a story from beginning to end.

Students will be expected to write three shorter assignments and two to three longer stories over the course of eight weeks.  We will meet for 1.25 hours each week (one hour one day and a 15 minute one-on-one revision session later in the week) with about 30 minutes of homework each night.

Class Size: 6-7 students

Class Time: One hour per week plus .25 hr one-on-one revision meeting*

Class Dates: Eight weeks*

Homework: Around 30-60 minutes each week

*Note: The detailed class time and dates will be determined by the majority of the registered students

About Coach Sarah

Sarah Garcia has been with Keetown since 2019. After falling in love with literature in 10th grade Honors English, Sarah studied English at Biola University where she earned her Bachelor's in Sociology with a double minor in English and Bible. After earning an opportunity to co-teach in California where she learned lesson planning and classroom management, she continued her education at Grand Canyon University to earn her Master's in Secondary Education and Teaching Certification.

Sarah has taught writing to students ages 5-21 both in schools and as a private tutor since 2004.  Serving as Department Head at the Arizona high school where she taught freshman and sophomore English, she earned high marks for the quality of her classroom management, instruction, and lesson planning for a diverse group of students. As a homeschool parent, Sarah teaches writing and literature to her own three children (her 9th grade daughter recently tested into college level English 101). She also teaches literature classes to groups of homeschooled students.

In addition, Sarah has worked as a book editor for a publishing company, as a set painter and designer for a local theater group, and she is currently working on a series of her own children's books. Her classes give students the ability to turn their thoughts into clear and creative text for the audience to understand and enjoy.
