Course Summary: Over a hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin famously said these words: Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." In this class, we will do both! In this course we will practice a variety of writing techniques for writing contests. We will explore multiple genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, to understand each as a distinctive medium. Furthemore, analyze what ties all these genres together. We will treat writing as a fun adventure of which we will travel to foreign lands, learn new ways of communicating, and grow as a result of the journey. Writing is a process, and we will engage in this process and learn to love the challenges the process brings. By the end of the course students will have written three works of literary art and submitted to three creative writing contests.

About Coach Katie
After receiving my B.A. from Hillsdale College in 2001, I worked in several fields, including the field of creative writing and media (as a freelance writer and documentary production assistant). In 2006, I earned my M.Ed. and became an Arizona certified secondary English teacher.
As a certified secondary English teacher, I strive not only to inspire my students to be passionate and bold writers, but I also give them the foundational structures to do so. In my classes, I draw on my many life experiences, along with the philosophical and educational principles of John Dewey: promoting the idea that students learn through “doing.” To that end, every class I teach is packed full of practice activities and meaningful discussions. Above all else, I strongly believe that by fostering strong writing skills in students (of all ages), we can make the world a better place. Ultimately, this is why I love teaching. I look forward to seeing you in class!
